Birthday Madness, July Wrap, and August Goals.

Hi folks!  Did you miss me?  I've been MIA for a few days because my husband and I are taking a little vacation to North Carolina and Georgia, so I haven't spent much time in front of my computer.

At a scenic overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway
(I fully realize that the answer for 99.99999% of my 3 blog readers is that you didn't even realize I was gone... but hey, a girl can dream, right?)

I mentioned that last Wednesday was my birthday.  My celebration was rather low-key--sleeping in, putzing around the house, yoga, and Thai food for dinner.  Simple but awesome.

It turns out that my dear husband planned a fabulous surprise party with a bunch of my friends at Rasika on Saturday.  The food was amazing--if you ever go (and you NEED to if you're in the DC area!) be sure to order the crispy spinach appetizer.  It's absolutely incredible!  (The rest of the food isn't too shabby either!)  Unfortunately, we didn't think to take any photos.  Boo!

I'll admit that I was a teensy bit suspicious that the celebration on my actual birthday was a little TOO low-key (especially given the absence of CAKE.)  I really wasn't expecting a surprise celebration, and certainly not at such a fabulous location.  Afterwards, some of us went back to my house for more merriment and ice cream cake.  (Carvel to be exact.  There's nothing better! Chocolate crunchies rule!)  We had a great time, and I'm really honored that so many of my friends took time out of their busy lives (and some traveled quite a distance) to celebrate my birthday.   I feel so blessed to have you in my life and I love you all!  Thank you!

Everything is better with cake... even when the cake might potentially burn the house down.
So, now that July has come and gone, I think it's time for me to wrap up my July goals and set some new ones for August.

My July goals were as follows:
  • Work out a minimum of 10 times (towards my 2011 goal of 10+ workouts/month, every month) - Progress: CHECK!  51 workouts in 31 days!
  • Practice yoga every day in July - Progress: DONE!  47 classes in 31 days, including a fabulous trip to Los Angeles for a yoga binge of 22 classes in 7 1/2 days. One of these days I'll finish my post about that trip!
I'm rather proud of my SparkPeople calendar for July:
Abnormally active July.  Click to biggie-size it.
Other July Fun:
31 workout days, 51 total workouts (47 yoga, 2 walking, 2 cycling)--personal record!
Workout minutes: 2,730
Calories burned: 16,608
Awesome yoga vacations: 1
Amazing new-to-me yoga teachers experienced: 4 (or maybe more, really.)

August is kind of a weird month for me.  I start out on vacation, my husband's birthday occurs during the second week, I've got band camp 1pm-9pm for two weeks (thus knocking out many of my regular yoga classes), and I'll be starting to prepare for the new school year--culminating with teacher planning week during the last week of the month.

A crazy busy month like this makes it difficult to maintain my normal workout schedule--and yet at the same time, it's a great opportunity to work on my self-discipline and not allow myself to use an irregular schedule as an excuse to fall back into sedentary ways.  In addition, I've been thinking about trying to develop a strong yoga practice at home, and I think the craziness of August might give me the perfect excuse to start working on it (especially while I'm on vacation and during the weeks of band camp).  So, with out further ado, here are my August goals!

August Goals:
  • Continue to work towards 2011 goal of 10+ workouts/month, every month
  • Bike the two miles to band camp for a minimum of 6 (out of 10) days.
  • Maintain my regular yoga practice (5 days/week) by supplementing regular classes with home practice as necessary.  Which means that I should probably start working on that for this week...
July was a seriously fantastic month in my world. Did you do anything fun and exciting in July?  Do you have any  big plans for August?  I'd love to hear about them!
